R1 Hosting was born out of the need for hosting for my own personal website on a provider that didn't disappear off the face of the Earth. I've seen a number of companies that offered seemingly good prices just disappear one day and leave hundreds of clients in the water. After being stung by this myself, I thought 'I can do better than this'. I figure there must be some kind of demand for high quality web hosting without the complex server hijacking scripts such as cPanel; people who know what they are doing and just want someone to provide them with the disk space and bandwidth.
R1 Hosting is soley owned and operated by me, Richard Stanway. I'm a student in the UK at the University of Hull studying Internet Computing and have always wanted to try my hand at web hosting and server management. The actual R1 Hosting servers are based in New Jersey on the East Coast of the United States for optimal speeds around the globe. I have a lot of experience with linux, programming and systems security - if you are interested in other services such as security consultation, server configuration, etc then get in touch.
If you've looked at the hosting packages you'll realise I don't offer tech support. I don't expect people to use R1 Hosting as their first time web host if they have not had much experience with the web as they will inevitably encounter difficulties. Rather, my intended clientele are experienced users who are happy to just be given the login details and left to do their thing. By not spending money on support staff I am able to keep costs down and invest further into the business.
Fast, reliable bandwidth is at the heart of any good website. Unlike most providers, the R1 Hosting network has multiple high speed network links to many of the top name carriers around the world. Based on the East Coast of the USA in New Jersey, high speed peering is available to all parts of the world. Bandwidth is primarly provided by MCI and Above.net. You can view a traceroute or ping from our server to your computer.
Rather than just throw RedHat on a linux box, install Apache and call myself an ISP, I have custom installed almost every aspect of the server with the latest software, architecture-specific optimizations and modified kernels for the best performance possible out of the hardware. Some software such as PHP is slightly modified by myself in order to provide the optimum solution for shared web hosting. No more waiting for 3rd party vendors to create packages before upgrading software - R1 Hosting will usually be running the latest version of all major applications within a few days of release.
I don't run any nice friendly click-pointy server-hogging control panel software. All software running on R1 Hosting is freely available, of which almost all of it is open source. I don't see the need to bind myself to expensive, proprietary 3rd party systems. There are enough generic web hosts out there that offer cPanel or Plesk or <insert other proprietary system here>, I didn't see the need to join them.
Since R1 Hosting operates entirely on freely available open source software, a portion of any profits will be donated to various open source projects and groups. Groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and others dedicated to preserving civil liberties and freedoms will also be supported by R1 Hosting.
